Help for the Helpers

What is a Wounded Healer?

In the realm of dedicated caregivers and guardians of safety, there exists a remarkable group of individuals known as “Wounded Healers.” These compassionate souls possess a unique gift—forged from the depths of their own struggles and scars—that fuels their extraordinary ability to care for and provide safety for others. Just like a phoenix rising from adversity, Wounded Healers have faced profound pain and hardship, ultimately transforming it into a wellspring of compassion and understanding.

This concept was introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, who recognized that those who have confronted and healed their own wounds often bring unparalleled empathy and insight to their  work (Jung, 1951).

The Hidden Burdens

Behind their heroic deeds, Wounded Healers silently bear an immense burden.  The weight of witnessing harrowing situations, striving for perfection in a high-stakes environment, vicarious trauma, long hours and pressure to provide care that conflicts with personal values can lead to emotional exhaustion, burnout, and an array of challenges.  While their commitment to helping others is unwavering, they often sacrifice their own well-being in the process.

Healing for the Helpers

I deeply honor and recognize the struggles faced by Wounded Healers whether they are currently working  or have previously served in any of these noble professions. This program is tailored to provide a sanctuary for those in the field of health and safety, including but not limited to:

  • Physicians/Veterinarians
  • Nurses
  • First Responders
  • Pharmacists
  • Mental Health Providers
  • Child/Adult Protective Services Staff

Not all healers are consciously aware of their own wounds; some may unknowingly suppress their pain while dedicating themselves to the care of others. My mission is to offer a safe and supportive space where you can embark on a journey of healing, restoration, and empowerment.

How I Help

  1. Understanding the Unseen Burdens: As a therapist, nurse, and former EMT/firefighter, I recognize the distinct hurdles encountered by individuals in the health and safety sector. Within our sanctuary, you’ll find a space that is safe, free of judgment, and conducive to openly exploring the emotional dimensions of your profession.

  2. Flexible and Accessible Support: I respect the demands of your busy schedule. With flexibility in mind, I offer brief yet impactful sessions, allowing you to seek support even during a lunch break or after hours.

  3. Addressing Toxic Stress or Trauma: I provide you with proven methods for processing painful experiences you may have encountered both during your career or earlier in life.

  4. Interpersonal Dynamics: Together, we navigate the intricacies of professional and personal relationships, harmonizing your authentic connections with family, friends, colleagues, and leadership. This process cultivates a synergy between providing exceptional care and preserving your emotional equilibrium, nurturing a profound wellspring of compassion for self and others.
